Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Department of Social Sciences in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW), Hanover, invite applications for a joint appointment to a

Professorship (W3-S) for “Science Studies”

in conjunction with a position as

Head of Research Area “Research System and Science Dynamics” at the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW), Hanover and Berlin

     starting as soon as possible.

The DZHW is jointly funded by the German federal and state governments. It was founded in September 2013 and currently employs about 300 staff. Its head office is in Hanover, with a branch in Berlin.

The research area “Research System and Science Dynamics” is currently focusing on the analysis of structures and interdependencies in the research system. Core research subjects include the interplay of different forms of governance, financing, funding and production; evaluation practices, their organisation and impact on decision-making; academic quality and how it can be ensured; and conditions for the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge. One of the research area’s topic fields is the development of bibliometric indicators and analysing how they affect organisational decisions and individual behaviour.

The appointee will further develop this research focus, using an interdisciplinary approach where appropriate and taking the recommendations of the German Council of Science and Humanities (WR) into account, particularly in relation to the closer interweaving of higher education research and science studies, with a view to developing the DZHW into a European competence centre with excellent research. This also entails setting the institute’s own innovative focal points and strengthening its integration in the international research landscape, while at the same time intensifying ties between Berlin and Hanover.

The appointee will carry out their research at the DZHW. Duties of the Area Head at DZHW include the supervision of scientific work and strategic planning for the research area “Research Systems and Science Dynamics”, with its current staff of approx. 40. In addition to expertise in their discipline, the appointee will have experience in leading a department of similar size and in the procurement and management of research projects.

The appointee will represent the field of Science Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in research and teaching, including a teaching obligation of two hours per semester week. His/her duties will include collaborating on related study programmes and cooperating with the interdisciplinary Robert Merton Centre at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

The appointee

  • has comprehensive expertise with a thorough theoretical foundation as well as an international reputation in science studies,
  • will actively collaborate in shaping the links between higher education research and science studies,
  • is able to apply the wide spectrum of methodological approaches in science studies (in particular, bibliometrics and quantitative survey research, as well as qualitative research approaches).

The applicant’s publications in renowned international journals and relevant research should demonstrate these abilities and skills. We are looking for someone with an international reputation (also measurable in bibliometric terms), who is actively involved in international collaboration and has experience in working abroad. Experience in the management and acquisition of third party funded projects, particularly interdisciplinary projects and projects closely related to practice, are also required. Experience in policy support and practical consultation are desirable.

We are looking for a dynamic, inclusive personality, with strengths in teamwork, excellent leadership qualities, a cooperative work style and good communication skills, who will maintain a high level of presence at DZHW both in Berlin and Hanover, and who will contribute to the ongoing integration of the two locations.

The appointment is for a permanent employment position, preferably with civil service status, on the basis of a cooperation agreement. The appointee will be given academic leave of absence by Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin to perform his/her duties as head of the research area “Research System and Science Dynamics” at the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW) (appointment procedure in accordance with the leave of absence model).

Applicants must meet the legal requirements for professorial appointments in accordance with § 100 of the “Berliner Hochschulgesetz.”

HU is seeking to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and specifically encourages qualified female scholars to apply. Researchers from abroad are welcome to apply. Severely disabled applicants with equivalent qualifications will be given preferential consideration. People with a migration background are specifically encouraged to apply.
