Department of Catholic Theology

Bewerbung bis

The newly founded Department of Catholic Theology is a central institute of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. It takes an innovative approach, focusing on theological anthropology, a new and extremely important interdisciplinary field within theology. Five professorships have been created and need to be filled.

The department is intended as an intellectual center for Catholic theology, one characterized by liberal-mindedness, excellence in research, innovative methodology, and compatibility with a wide range of interests. Its interdisciplinary program will put it into dialogue with politics, culture, religion, and society. With a firm commitment to secularization, religious pluralism, and globalization – all values that clearly animate the city of Berlin – the department will reflect the central message of Christianity regarding humankind and the latter’s expression in the individuality of human beings. The department’s work will be steeped in the texts of the Bible and the tradition of Christian teaching, but it will also confront new challenges to our understanding of human personality, such as those posed in the realms of medicine and biotechnology. A specific focus will be placed on world-historical perspectives, gender, and interfaith dialogue. In line with this unique profile, the department will offer a (single-concentration) bachelor’s degree program in “Religion and Society.” Other degree programs may be developed in the future. In addition, the department has been tasked with training teachers of Catholic religion in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs.

In order to embed the question of the conditio humana in a multiplicity of disciplines, department faculty will receive a secondary appointment in a department or faculty that is closely connected with their area of specialization. Faculty from other departments and faculties can also receive a secondary appointment in the Department of Catholic Theology. Members of the department are expressly encouraged to be active in research associations.
